BACKGROUND:

the work is often compared to shells, which is an understandable reaction, though not accurate that would seem like trying to improve on nature. There are actually as few outside influences at work as possible until a section of a piece is finished; it is then considered, evaluated, altered. Any drawing is done usually afterwards, rather than in the process of planning a piece.

I work slowly, making between eight and twenty-five pieces a year – the productive years are not necessarily the best.

Art, being a discipline, requires discipline.

The use nowadays by fine artists of traditional craft materials is not a bad thing but it has confused everything: no one seems sure any more in what context the terms craft and sculpture should be used.
